Leading My Family Through the Fall Rush

    Seasons Change, But Faith Remains

As the school year quickly approaches and sports seasons begin, the pace of life seems to shift into overdrive. Summer’s warmth is fading, and those late nights of grilling in the backyard are giving way to crisp fall evenings under the lights of hockey rinks and ball fields.

For many families like mine, this time of year is both exciting and daunting. Each of our kids has their own sport or activity: travel hockey five nights a week, tee-ball, competitive dance, karate, Cub Scouts—not to mention the schoolwork that stacks up fast once September hits. Add to that the overtime shifts that come with police work, the responsibilities of being a husband, and the daily call to fatherhood, and the calendar feels like it could break under the weight of it all.

I know I’m not alone in feeling that tension. Parents everywhere are faced with the same juggling act, trying to make sure nothing and no one gets left behind. But here’s what I’ve learned: in the middle of the chaos, prayer cannot be optional.

Just as we make time for practices, rehearsals, and games, we must also make time to gather as a family before God. It doesn’t have to be complicated—sometimes it’s just a decade of the Rosary before bed, a quick prayer before piling into the car, or taking five minutes at the dinner table to thank Him for the day. What matters is that prayer is present, consistent, and a reminder that Christ is at the center of it all.

Because in the end, what our children will remember isn’t just the trophies, the medals, or the test scores. They’ll remember whether we showed them that prayer matters—that faith isn’t squeezed in when convenient, but is the foundation on which everything else stands.

As a Catholic father, my calling goes beyond protecting and providing. It’s also to lead my family spiritually—to set the tone that no matter how busy life gets, God comes first. The seasons may change, the schedules may shift, but our faith must remain constant.

So as we head into this new season, I encourage you to look at your own schedule. Dial it in, keep what matters, let go of what doesn’t, and make sure that time with God and your family is non-negotiable. That’s where true strength comes from. And unlike sports seasons or school calendars, that’s one season that never ends.
