The Extra Strength God Gives to Parents

There is a unique strength that only parents understand. A strength that doesn’t come from sleep, caffeine, or willpower alone — but one that I firmly believe is granted by God Himself. It’s the strength to give just a little more of yourself, even when you feel like you have nothing left.
This past week tested me on every level. As a police officer, my schedule isn’t always predictable or forgiving. Over the course of just a few days, I worked nearly 96 hours. Physically drained, mentally exhausted, and running on fumes, I finally came home after a long double shift, ready to collapse and rest.
But the moment I walked through that door, any notion of rest disappeared. My three children were waiting, full of energy and excitement.
“Dad’s home!”
The joy on their faces, the eager voices calling me to play, to wrestle, to be present — it hit me all at once.
And today, as they had been asking most of the week, they were ready to finally go for the bike ride they had been waiting for. Tired as I was, my wife and I both knew this was their moment — and we couldn’t let it pass.
In that moment, something happens that I can only attribute to God’s grace. Though our bodies were screaming for rest, our hearts found a deeper reserve of strength — the strength to be present. To lace up our shoes, to go outside, to ride alongside them, to laugh, to share time together — to be the parents they need.
As Christian parents, we know that our calling isn’t always convenient. It’s sacrificial. But Scripture reminds us:
“I can do all things through Christ
who strengthens me.”
— Philippians 4:13
This is the quiet miracle of parenthood — that God grants us what we need in the moment we need it most. Not for our own sake, but for the sake of the little souls entrusted to us.
It’s not perfect. It’s not always easy. But in those moments — tired, weak, and spent — God supplies a strength that goes beyond human capacity. He gives parents an extra measure of grace, to keep showing up, to keep loving, and to keep leading.
If you’re a parent who feels worn thin — know this: you are not doing this alone. God sees. God provides. And His strength is made perfect in our weakness.
