Wrapped in Love: A Mother’s Reflection on Mary's Mantle

Today, while getting ready and anxious to deliver my 4th child, I have been reflecting and asking Mary, our Beloved Mother, to watch over us and guide this labor and delivery.
Another part of this chaotic time is nesting! One of my favorite items that I cleaned and prepped is my baby wrap. There is nothing like keeping your newborn close to your heart while being able to hold and help your other children.
I recently read a blog that mentioned Mary's Mantle. Usually when people refer to Mary’s mantle, they often think of her veil. But in Mary’s time, it was more likely referring to the fabric wrap she used to carry baby Jesus.
I haven’t stopped thinking about that.
The idea that when we ask Mary to “wrap her mantle around us,” we’re actually asking her to carry us close to her heart — just as she did her Son — brings tears to my eyes. The beauty of this image lands deeply in my mama soul. I know what it feels like to cradle a tiny life in a sling, swaying gently, heartbeats syncing, warmth shared. It’s more than convenience — it’s communion.
Babywearing recreates the womb in a way nothing else does. It calms, it reassures, it bonds. And now I see: when we ask Mary to wrap us in her mantle, we are asking her to soothe us as she soothed Jesus, to draw us close where we can feel her love, her strength, and her presence.
Back then, there were no fancy strollers, bassinets, or car seats. There was just Mom. And that was enough. It still is.
So to my fellow mothers: when life feels overwhelming, when your arms are full and your heart even fuller, consider wrapping your little one in your own “mantle.” You’ll both find peace there.
And to our Blessed Mother — Mama Mary — please carry us in your mantle, close to your Immaculate Heart. Let us feel your love the way your Son did.
God Bless,
